About “Parkour

David Belle, the founder of parkour Parkour, also called “l’art du déplacement” (”the art of discplacement” in english) is an art to help you pass all obstacles on your way using only your human capabilities and your environment. The aim is to go from a point A to a point B as efficiently and as fast as possible. Parkour helps to develop your body and mind to be able to overcome obstacles in an emergency
It is meant to help practitionners to overcome obstacles, which can be anything in the surrounding environment (from concrete walls and rails to branches and rocks) and can be practiced in both rural and urban areas. Male parkour practitioners are called “Traceurs” and female are called “Traceuses“.
Parkour has been founded by David Belle in France about 20 years ago.

About “free running

Free running, also called “free run” or “freerun” is a sport in which freerunners (the participants of free running) try to pass all obstacles in their path in a smooth and fluid way. Free runners interact with their environment using movements such as vaulting, jumping, somersaults and other acrobatic movements which can be unuseful to create an athletic and aesthetically pleasing way of moving. It is commonly practiced at gymnasiums and in urban areas that are cluttered with obstacles.

Differences between parkour and free running

  • Parkour focuses on practicing efficient movements and can help to overcome obstacles in an emergency.
  • Free running is a copy of parkour. Their practitionners just added acrobatics (which come from gymnastic) and one different aim : to be aesthetic.

While parkour may be useful in the real life, free running is not. The result of free running may look funny and absurd sometimes, particulary when free runners tries to pass over invisible obstacles. :-D
